Uma Thurman was named after the Hindu goddess Parvati, whose alternate name, Uma, means "light" in Sanskrit. She was born in Boston to Robert Thurman, a professor, and Nena von Schlebrugge, a model. She moved frequently during her childhood, and her family lived in India for a time, where the Dalai Lama visited their home.
She was teased throughout her childhood and adolescence for being too tall and thin, and for years wore mainly baggy clothes and little makeup.
Uma signed with Click Models in 1987, and at only 15, she had already appeared on the covers of "Glamour," "Vogue USA," and "Vogue UK." The next year, she began acting, and was cast in four films in her first year.
From there, she has appeared in "Dangerous Liaisons," "Pulp Fiction," "Batman and Robin," "Les Miserables," "Kill Bill," "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," and "Bel Ami."
