Zoe Saldana was born to a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother. She is fluent in both English and Spanish. Though she was born in New Jersey, she spent much of her childhood in Queens, New York, and considers it her hometown.
At age 17, she began acting in a Brooklyn theater group, and after an appearance in a production of "Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat," she was recruited by a talent agency. Her past experience with various forms of dance led her to land her first role, starring in "Center Stage." She gained further popularity in her brief but memorable role as Anamaria in "Pirates of the Caribbean." She has also appeared in "Guess Who," "Star Trek," "Avatar," and "Colombiana."
